Ask any hip hop head and they will tell you; ‘fakin the funk’ is one of two things…
1- a dope song
2- pretending to be something/someone you aren’t.
I wanna send a big shoutout to my fam, Deja Coley, and the event she has going on in the Cap City next week; where both of those definitions meet…in a fun, positive way.
“Girls Like Me” is a non-profit organization that Deja started to benefit girls between the ages of 13 and 17.
The organization’s goal is to infuse self-confidence by using career focused workshops, community service, and team building activities to help young ladies grow.
Next week’s event is part of the process.
“Fake the Funk” is a fundraising effort to bring awareness to the need for self-confidence in our teen girls; and also to raise funds in order to further the GLM mission and support the program.
I remember Deja mentioning this event idea to me last year. To see it actually blossom and develop into what it has become is a testament to her passion and perseverance.
This 23 year old ODU grad has a dream and is working to fulfill it. I’m proud of her efforts.
Also…look for Ms. Deja Coley this Friday on “Virginia This Morning” (9am on CBS) as she is scheduled to be interviewed about her organization and the event.
She is a great young lady from a great family doing great things.
