Let me be real with y’all right here and now.
I am generally not a fan of the month of August.
It’s often unnecessarily hot and muggy. Bugs everywhere. And to top it off this year (and the past couple), our oldest is headed back to college after being home with us for about three months.
It’s just not a month I really rock with regularly.
But apparently, August is on a mission to win my heart, faith, love, AND admiration in 2019.
Because this August that’s jumping off right now…this August…this August right here…has been lit (aside from the daughter leaving part).
Here are 5 reasons why:
1- The NFL Preseason Ended Last Night-
I cannot stand preseason football. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s like going to the strip club. It may seem like a whole lot of action to some; but in reality, nothing is really bout to jump off.
Thursday…we get the real thing.
I’m not sure if that makes this Thursday’s season opener a prostitute, a one night stand, or the beginning of a new romance; but whichever it is, let’s get it poppin.
2- New 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Music-
For those of you looking for that good good in the form of music, here we go.
Rapsody released a superb project that I’ve been listening to nonstop for a week. This “Eve” album deserves your attention.
-we got a new album from Little Brother
-Raphael Saadiq dropped something new
-Missy Elliott is repping VA with her latest EP
-Joell Ortiz has gave us a new joint today
-Pusha T released a song with the elusive Ms. Lauryn Hill on the hook…
-and my ‘at one time’ favorite emcee, Common, has blessed us with his “Let Love” album.
The good stuff is definitely out there. One just has to actively look for it to find it.
3- Bringing Back My Favorite Movies-
Have you heard about the long awaited sequel to “Coming to America” that’s being filmed right now?
How about the latest in the line of “Matrix” flicks?
Mannnnnn listen. Between these two and the previously discussed “Bad Boys 3” on the way, I’ll take sequels and re-boots over everything else.
4- Mr. David Chappelle-
One of the greatest standup comedians ever is back with another Netflix special.
“Sticks & Stones” is wild denna mug.
Some will love it. Some will hate it.
I can’t front. I watched it once, and I was like “Ehhhhh ok.”
It was A LOT…and after one viewing, I wasn’t sure how much I liked it. But something told me to give it a second shot.
And I am glad I did.
This special is BRILLIANT.
If you are a person who sees things in black and white only, don’t watch.
But if you appreciate nuanced conversation and the depth of the jokes, this is a must watch.
5- The Always Appreciated 3 Day Weekend-
No explanation needed, but I will tell you this…
The fam and I are invited to a quinceañera this weekend.
If you’ve never been to one, trust me when I say this: it’s gonna be a LITUATION.
Technically, it doesn’t take place until September 1st, but this year we will refer to it as August 32nd.
That’s all I’ve got.
August, you are in my good graces for 2019…but come 2020, we might be back to our regularly scheduled “I don’t really mess with you like that for real” vibes.
Let’s play it by ear.
